I went to Smith Butcher and Grill Room which is located at the Ground Floor of ACI Building on 147 H.V. de la Costa Street in Salcedo Village, Makati.
The building is only a two-storey structure with a temporary feel. I have a hunch that the property will eventually be demolished and replaced with a high rise.
Being just minutes away from where I lived and being not in the mood to dress up after my morning walk, I went straight to the restaurant in shorts and a slightly sweaty shirt. Sorry, I know I'm gross but its lunchtime and I doubt if the place will be full.
True enough, it was deserted with only another table being occupied. A surly-looking Caucasian was manning the bar and pointed out that I could have any table I wanted.
Lighting must play an effective role in making the interiors posh-looking at night. At daytime, the place looked just fine with cowhide-covered sofas and faux leather chairs.
A sneak peek of the kitchen can be had from the table I chose.
This rectangular table with polished stones is so cool.
There are various sections where groups or individuals are afforded the privacy they may require. Its usually the wheelers and dealers who love to patronise these expensive places.
An impressive aspect of the restaurant is the butcher room with chains and pulleys for animal carcasses. The restaurant has an exhaustive selection of steaks of various degrees from the U.S., France, Japan, Australia and even Ireland.
The most expensive item I read on the menu was the Entrecote/Rib Eye from Japan which is priced at P 4,650.00 for one person and described as Japanese matsusaka, chilled, air-flown direct from Japan. I'm not from the demographics that orders something like this nonchalantly and zoomed in on the least expensive steak.
The wine list seemed likewise impressive. Of course, there are other items on the menu that aren't derived from a cow but since steak is the specialty, then this is the dish I should have.
For starters, I had the Salad of Warm Spinach, Wild Mesclun, Pear & Blue Cheese - " with pickled beets & candied pili nuts topped with smoked bacon ".
I'm impressed with the generous serving which could easily be shared.
Taste-wise, the salad was delicious and robust. I was almost full after this dish.
Steaks come with two sides. I got Steamed Spinach and Hand Cut Fries.
Horse radish and mustard as accompaniment for the main course.
Ketchup and Black Truffle Sauce.
The cheapest steak item is the Faux Fillet/Sirloin from Australia - " organic, grass fed, fresh chilled ".
If I'm not mistaken, this is 250 grams and it was a decent size for my hunger.
The steak was delectable on its own. It was soft and moist. The expensive ones must taste like heaven on earth, if ever there's such a thing.
The sides and sauces were also good but definitely mere sidelines on the plate.
Adding the Black Truffle Sauce heightened the experience but honestly, I was quite content with enjoying the meat on its own.
I was full after the meal. I didn't expect to be but I slowly walked back home contentedly. My experience at Smith Butcher and Grill Room was pleasant, relaxing and truly enjoyable. Too bad I won't be going back unless someone invites me and picks up the tab.
